It was very sad earlier this evening (25-08-12), to learn of the news that Neil Armstrong, the first human to set foot on the Moon, has died.
Neil Armstrong’s family released the statement: “We are heartbroken to share the news that Neil Armstrong has passed away following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures.” His family are also providing updates to the website, Neil A. Armstrong.
The website, Space.com has a comprehensive article covering the news. There are also other relevant articles linked from the website’s home page.
Apollo 11 landing on the Moon was one of those special events in history, whereby you never forget where you were at the time. I still have vivid memories of sitting up through what in the UK were the early hours of July 21st, seeing the first images and of course hearing the immortal quote.
It seems especially sad that Neil Armstrong has died before any serious return to the Moon has taken place. As a thirteen-year-old at the time of Apollo 11, with 2001: A Space Odyssey having been so inspiring the previous year, it felt as though it was the beginning of a whole new era on the Moon and in space. Well, maybe one day.
